In my previous post, I spoke about the Maldives’ first ever multi party elections which has now officially ended and the public await impatiently for the final verdict. Temporary results of the voting seem to be in favour of Presidential candidate of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Mr. Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom, who is also our current president since 1978, followed by Mohamed Nasheed, Anni of Maldives Democratic Party.

Here are the rough results of the votes counted so far.

In spite of the obvious lead by Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, it does look like the Maldives might have to go for a second round of elections as preliminary results are short of the required 50% majority.

For now we can only wait for the final results, which are expected to be announced sometime today.
