Voting to choose a President in the Maldives may not be an easy choice in spite of the extremely distinct profiles, backgrounds, personalities and reasons behind the candidacies.

It is true that a lot of us want a change. But we also want that change to be a positive change. A change just for the sake of a change isn’t going to be necessarily beneficial to the country. Similarly being satisfied with mere mediocrity or stability may never show us what better opportunities lay ahead of us, if we don’t take risks and favour a change?

Based on this now I ask the question… what are we voting for? A change? What kind of change? A positive, negative or no change? Are we voting for a completely new Maldives or the old Maldives with improvements?

Looking at the presidential candidates, there is no one candidate who would make up the list of all characteristics most people would want in a president. Hence it was mostly a question of priority. Who did we vote for and why? Maumoon for his experience, Gasim for his influence, Anni for his courage, Hassan Saeed for his academic excellence, Umaru for his passion or Ibra for his persistence?
